A Journey Through Supertuscan Excellence: An Exclusive Tasting Experience

We are excited to share a narration of the unique experience we had the privilege to offer at our store: an extraordinary Supertuscan wine tasting.

Supertuscan tastings are just one of the many experiences we propose to our clients, yet this particular one stands out for those wishing to delve deep into these excellences. Each tasting is enriched with assorted platters of unique selection cheeses and cold cuts, designed to enhance the flavors of the wines offered.

Supertuscans represent a category of wines that made their market debut in the early ’80s, establishing a parallel with the prestigious wines of Bordeaux. Often characterized by a blend of grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other non-native Tuscan grapes, these wines evoke the renowned Bordeaux blend.

Tignanello, an audacious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, was the first Supertuscan to be created, marking the beginning of this prestigious category.

This tasting offered the opportunity to explore, together with our sommelier, the history, complexity, and charm of the Supertuscans. An experience that left our clients both enchanted and eager to further deepen their knowledge.

The welcome glass, affectionately defined by us as “carefree,” introduced “Marcello col Fondo,” a bottle-fermented wine of Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio grapes, produced by the Voltumna winery. This wine stands out for its delicate and fresh sip.

The selection then enriched with the first two Supertuscans, to allow our guests to appreciate the distinction between a 100% Cabernet Franc and a 100% Merlot: respectively Filare 18 by Casadei and Il Profeta by Macchion dei Lupi. Both originating from the area of Suvereto, in the province of Livorno, Tuscany, these wines express the essence of the coastal territory.

The first is a pure Cabernet Franc from 2019, vinified in amphorae and aged in barriques for about 20 months, offering excellent drinkability, structure, and notable persistence. The second, a 100% Merlot from 2016, is produced naturally, without “corrections,” offering a bouquet of intriguing aromas, smoothness, and velvety texture on the palate, with a finish that recalls blackberry.

The third wine, “Il Ritrovo” from 2013, comes from Gaiole in Chianti, one of the most historical areas of the Chianti Classico. This blend of Sangiovese and Merlot ages in barriques for about 18 months, resulting in a wine of great structure, supported by the characteristic acidity of Sangiovese and balanced by a pleasant tannic texture, giving it complexity and persistence.

In conclusion, our guests were surprised by a blind tasting of a wine that highlighted its extraordinary longevity: Argena by Tenuta Il Santo, produced only in the best vintages. This blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon from 2004, after about two years of aging in large barrels and barriques, rests in the bottle for 16 years before being introduced to the market.
